This type of basil is native to Southeast Asia and has been cultivated to provide distinctive traits. Widely used throughout Southeast Asia, its flavor, described as anise- and licorice-like and slightly spicy, is more stable under high or extended cooking temperatures than that of sweet basil. Its distinctive purple stems and purple veined leaves make this plant great for growing ornamentally or for culinary purposes.
- Since this herb prefers warm weather, most gardeners with a sort growing season prefer to start basil seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date.
- Seeds can be direct sowed after last frost 1/4" deep in rich soil and full sun.
- Thai basil thrives in soil that drains well, but needs water frequently.
